Scooter & Tuk Tuk Rental · Arugam Bay

Scooter & tuk tuk rental in Arugam Bay

The easy, cheap way to reach every surf point and beach on your own schedule — handed over clean, ready to ride, with helmets for two.

Arugam Bay is spread out: Main Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock and Pottuvil town all sit a few kilometres apart along one quiet coast road. A scooter turns a day of waiting for tuk tuks into ten minutes of riding — chase the surf, find breakfast, and get back in time for the evening session.

We keep a small fleet of reliable automatic scooters — the easy twist-and-go kind, fine even if you've never ridden before. Every bike is checked between rentals, comes with two helmets, and is delivered free to your guesthouse. Keep it a week or a month and the daily price drops.

Every rental includes

  • Two helmets — proper ones, and required by law in Sri Lanka
  • Free delivery and collection at your Arugam Bay hotel
  • A quick, honest handover so you know the bike before you ride
  • On-road backup — one WhatsApp message for a swap, a flat, or directions

Why rent with SP

Plenty of places hire scooters in Arugam Bay. Here's why travellers come back to us.

Bikes that actually run

Every scooter is checked, cleaned and topped up between rentals. Good tyres, working brakes, working lights — the boring things that matter most when you're on a strange road.

Free delivery, free pickup

We bring the scooter to your guesthouse and collect it when you leave. No trudging across town with your bags, no deposit-day queue.

Helmets, always

Two good helmets come with every bike — not an afterthought. They're the law here, and they're what counts on loose sand and gravel.

Honest about the rules

We tell every rider about the licence and permit rules up front, instead of letting you find out at a police checkpoint. Straight answers, no surprises.

More than scooters

Need four wheels, a driver, or a lift to the airport? We do that too.

How it works

1 Message us on WhatsApp

Tell us your dates, where you're staying, and what you need — scooter, tuk tuk, or a transfer. We reply fast. No email, no app to download.

2 We deliver to your door

We bring the scooter and helmets to your hotel in Arugam Bay, check your papers, and sort the deposit.

3 Quick handover

We walk you round the bike, show you the lights and fuel, and point you to the nearest petrol station and the best surf.

4 Ride — we're one message away

Keep riding for as long as you booked. Flat tyre, a question, want to extend? One WhatsApp and we'll sort it.

What you'll need

Your passport, your home driving licence, and ideally an International Driving Permit (IDP). To ride legally you'll also need a Sri Lankan temporary permit — we'll point you to the quickest way to get one. Bring a deposit (cash is easiest), and closed shoes beat flip-flops on the road.

Local, reliable, on your side

SP Scooter & Taxi is run by Sanka, a local from Arugam Bay who has spent years helping travellers get around the east coast. You're dealing with a real person who lives here — not a faceless booking desk.

We keep it simple and straight: well-kept bikes, fair prices that drop the longer you stay, and honest advice about licences, roads, and where to surf. Whatever you book, you've got our WhatsApp the whole time you're in town.

Sanka's full story and photo are coming soon.

Questions renters ask

Do I need a licence to rent and ride a scooter in Sri Lanka?
Yes. To ride legally you need a Sri Lankan temporary driving permit, which tourists get by validating their home motorbike licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP). It's quick and inexpensive — it can be arranged through the Automobile Association of Ceylon (including online) or the Department of Motor Traffic, and we'll point you to the fastest option for where you are. Riding without it risks a police fine and can void your travel insurance.
I've never ridden a scooter — is it hard?
Our scooters are automatic — no gears, no clutch, just twist and go. If you can ride a bicycle you'll be comfortable within a few minutes. We give you a calm handover, and the coast road around Arugam Bay is quiet and flat. Take it slowly at first, wear the helmet, and you'll be fine.
What deposit do you take?
A small refundable deposit for the length of the rental — cash is easiest, and we hand it straight back when you return the bike in good order. We can hold a passport instead, but cash is simpler for everyone. We'll confirm the exact amount on WhatsApp before you book.
Is fuel included?
No — scooters are handed over with just enough fuel to reach the nearest station, and you return them however full you like. Petrol is cheap here and a tankful goes a long way; the nearest pump is a couple of minutes from the bay and we'll show you where it is.
Are helmets provided?
Yes — two good helmets with every scooter, at no extra cost. Helmets are required by law in Sri Lanka and the police do check. Please wear them: the risk on loose sand and gravel is real.
Do you deliver to my hotel?
Yes — free delivery and collection anywhere in Arugam Bay, and usually Pottuvil too. Just tell us where you're staying when you book and we'll bring the scooter and helmets to you.
What if the scooter breaks down or gets a flat?
Message us. We're local, so we can usually reach you quickly to fix a flat, swap the bike, or talk you through it. You won't be left stranded — that's the whole point of renting from someone who's actually here.
Is there insurance, and what if there's an accident?
Scooters carry the basic third-party cover required in Sri Lanka, but it's limited — treat your own travel insurance as your real cover, and note that most policies only pay out if you hold the correct licence and permit and were wearing a helmet. Ride within your limits. If anything happens, message us first and we'll help you handle it.
Can I take the scooter to the surf points and nearby towns?
Absolutely — that's what it's for. Main Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock and Pottuvil are all easy rides. Planning something longer (Panama, Lahugala, further afield)? Tell us and we'll make sure you've got the right bike and the right advice.
How much is an airport transfer, and how long does it take?
Arugam Bay to Colombo Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) is a long drive — roughly 7 to 9 hours depending on traffic and stops — in a comfortable air-conditioned car or van with an experienced driver, day or night. We price it per vehicle; message us with your flight time and number of passengers and we'll send a quote.
Can I rent a tuk tuk or hire a taxi with a driver instead?
Yes. We rent self-drive tuk tuks (great for groups, luggage and surfboards), and we run a private taxi service with a driver — for airport runs, long-distance drops anywhere on the island, and day tours such as a Kumana or Yala safari, with the driver waiting for you.
How do I book and pay?
Everything happens on WhatsApp — tell us your dates, where you're staying, and what you need, and we'll confirm the price and delivery. You pay locally (cash is easiest; just ask about other options). There's no online payment and no email.
